The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day

Today was The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day at our house.  The girls have had this famous book, written by Eric Carle, in board book style since they were born and never could sit past the part about the egg on a leaf until lately!  Suddenly it has became their favorite book (I'd like to think it's because we are in the middle of our bug unit!) so I decided to focus our activities for the day around The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar craft
To prepare this craft for the girls, I cut green circles for the body, a red circle for the head, yellow and green ovals for the eyes, purple for the antenna, and a little green circle for the mouth.  Then I helped the girls glue the green circles in a line on white construction paper to make the body.

We added the red circle for the head, and then the eyes, mouth and antenna.  I gave the girls a brown marker to add legs to the caterpillar.  It ended up just as scribbles but that's ok too!  Then I just so happen to find "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" stickers at our local dollar store.  So we added those stickers to the picture as well.  I think they turned out so cute!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar Snack
I made this snack for the girls using cut grapes for the body and antenna, a sliced strawberry for the head, blueberries for the eyes, nose, and feet, pepperoni for the sun and cheese for the sun's rays.  They loved it!

Butterfly Sun Catchers
Lastly, we talked about how the Very Hungry Caterpillar turns into a butterfly at the end of the story.  I cut out a butterfly shape and stuck it to clear contact paper.  Then the girls added different colored squares of tissue paper.  We glued on pipe cleaner antenna and eyes before we hung them in the window!
